Vietnamese news outlets report that one person is confirmed dead while two others have gone missing after a fishing vessel and a locally-registered cargo ship collided with each other off Quang Ngai province in central Vietnam on Friday, February 23.

An initial investigation stated that the fishing vessel broke in half due to the impact, thus forcing the nine-strong crew to jump into the sea some five nautical miles off the coast.

Rescuers from various agencies pulled seven people from the surrounding waters. Six of them suffered non-life-threatening injuries while the seventh was later pronounced deceased while being treated in hospital.

Two other fishermen from the same ill-fated boat remain unaccounted for. The search for these individuals is still ongoing.

Local authorities have called on the owners of the cargo ship to assist in the search for the missing fishermen and to cooperate in the investigation into the incident.
