Icelandic fishing companies award contract for seven stern trawlers

Norwegian shipbuilder Vard has secured contracts for the design and construction of seven stern trawlers for four Icelandic fishing companies.

The stern trawlers measure 29 metres by 12 metres, and will be constructed and outfitted by Vard Aukra in Norway for delivery in 2019.

The total contract value is about NOK700 million (US$84 million).

Each vessel has a large trawl deck with electric permanent magnet motor-driven trawl winches, a twin screw mechanical propulsion system, large propellers and rudders to ensure smooth operations in harsh environments and safe handling of the fishing gear.

Accommodating a crew of 13 people, the vessels also have a 240-cubic-metre refrigerated cargo hold and a fish processing area.

The first two vessels will be delivered to Bergur-Huginn in the first and second quarters of 2019.

The third vessel will be delivered to Utgerdarfelag Akureyringa, a wholly owned subsidiary of seafood company Samherji, in the second quarter of 2019.

The fourth and fifth vessels are scheduled for delivery to Gjøgur in the second and third quarters of 2019.

Skinney-Thinganes will take delivery of the sixth and seventh vessels in the third and fourth quarters of 2019.
