The Philippine National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) will launch a programme that seeks to replenish the stocks of blue swimming crab in the waters of Eastern Samar province.

The programme will consist of successive monthly releases of crablets in seagrass beds along reefs off the town of Guiuan, where crab harvesting normally occurs. The periodic releases are scheduled to conclude in June 2021.

The project, which is funded by the country’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), is expected to help address possible fishery market supply problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
