New fish farm to be built in southern Bahrain

FISHING/AQUACULTURE WEEK

The Bahraini government has entered into an agreement with a Saudi Arabia-based private company on the acquisition of land to serve as the site of a future fish farm.

The agreement between the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs, and Urban Planning and Kadi Group Holding (KGH) – which was signed on Wednesday, May 20 – covers six plots of land in the southern part of the country.

The land will be used by a number of private companies for the harvest of fish fingerlings of species that enjoy high demand in the local market.

Officials say the new fish farm is expected to help ensure Bahrain’s seafood industry will be 50 to 62 per cent dependent on domestic production as part of the country’s food security strategy.
