Chilean fish harvesting company Ventisqueros recently began operating a new salmon farm powered entirely by renewable energy.

The farm is located near Chiloé Island in the southern region of Los Lagos. Power generated by onshore solar and wind farms in the nearby municipality of Tubildad is supplied to the facility via a 1.2-kilometre-long undersea cable buried at depths of up to 40 metres.

Ventisqueros said the facility is the first salmon farm in the southern hemisphere to run entirely on clean energy.
