BOOK REVIEW | Handling Ships in First-Year Ice (Second Edition)

By Johan Buysse

Another of the Nautical Institute’s excellent little handbooks of modern seamanship. This one is in its second edition, so it must be popular despite its somewhat obscure subject.

Obviously, most mariners avoid ice like the plague but, if you operate in Arctic or Antarctic or even North European and North American waters, you sometimes have to face up to it. Indeed, shipping is increasingly operating in such waters so those voyaging there need to know how to navigate safely in such conditions.

This exceptionally well-illustrated book tells you how to do so. It is simple, systematic and all-encompassing.
