BOOK REVIEW | The Sea – Exploring our Blue Planet

It is very unusual for a children’s book to be reviewed here. So, obviously, this one must be very good. It is.

As a parent of three and grandfather of one, your reviewer is very familiar with children’s books. So much so that he has become very tired of many of them, particularly the more recent ones. Apart from being overly simple, repetitive and largely unoriginal, far too many of them have become sickeningly politically correct.

This one is the complete antithesis of all that. It is straightforward, accurate and informative. Most importantly, it is completely devoid of deceptive political correctness. It also happens to be tightly written and brilliantly illustrated.

Not being a television viewer, your reviewer is not familiar with the author, Ms Krestovnikoff. According to the blurb, she is widely acclaimed as “the new David Attenborough”. That seems reasonable given the refreshingly realistic approach she has made here. Ms Calder, too has made a major contribution. Her illustrations are delightful. They are quite brilliant.

Buy copies for your children or grandchildren, as appropriate. The book makes a wonderful present.
