Statoil awards $490 million EPC contract for Johan Castberg FPSO

Statoil has awarded Sembcorp Marine Rigs and Floaters a US$490 million turnkey contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the hull and living quarters for a newbuild floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) for the Johan Castberg project.

To be stationed 240 kilometres offshore Hammerfest in the Barents Sea, the 295-metre-long FPSO’s hull will be about 55 metres wide. It will be self-contained for harsh-environment operation, with the quarters accommodating up to 140 personnel.

Sembcorp Marine has subcontracted Aker Solutions for design of the living quarters. It will split work on the accommodation unit between its locations in Oslo and Mumbai, with delivery scheduled for the second half of 2018.

The full project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2020.

Statoil’s Senior Vice-President for Project Development Torger Rød said construction of the hull was the most time-critical delivery for the completion of the Johan Castberg project for its scheduled start in 2022.

The contract will have a separate cancellation clause linked to the approval of the plan for development and operation.
