Scotland’s decommissioning centre awarded £1.9 million in funding

The Scottish Government has awarded £1.9 million (US$2.5 million) in grant funding for the National Decommissioning Centre of Excellence.

The partnership between the University of Aberdeen and the Oil and Gas Technology Centre will be based at the university’s Oceanlab facility.

Scheduled to open in late 2018, the centre will tackle current and future challenges with world-class research and development in partnership with the oil and gas industry in the UK and internationally.

Among the various projects, the centre aims to develop technology for testing, certification and deployment.

It will invest in an underwater cutting laser that it hopes could save the industry up to £90 million once it is trialled on the UK Continental Shelf.

Its dedicated computer lab will allow the fast simulation and modelling of high-value decommissioning solutions and scenarios.

University of Aberdeen’s Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange Richard Neilson said the centre was seeking industry partners to help deliver a 35 per cent reduction in the cost of decommissioning.
