A fairway deepening project will be undertaken at the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden to enable the port to better serve export and import industries.

The fairway deepening will be done in conjunction with quay reinforcement works that were started earlier this year. Gothenburg Port Authority (GPA) Göran Eriksson expects the deepening to be completed by 2028.

The planned deepening will entail the dredging of approximately 11 cubic metres of material to increase the maximum draught of the fairway to 17.5 metres from its current depth of 13.5 metres. This will enable vessels measuring 430 by 65 metres to easily and safely access the fairway.

The dredging phase is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026.

The works have an estimated value of approximately SEK2.8 billion (US$260.8 million), of which GPA will contribute SEK1.25 billion (US$116.4 million).
