TOTE Services and Philly Shipyard have cut the first steel for the third National Security Multimission Vessel (NSMV) ordered by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) of the US Department of Transportation.

The third NSMV will be operated by Maine Maritime Academy following its scheduled delivery in 2024.

In addition to operating primarily as a training ship, the NSMV will be available to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions in times of need.

The vessel will feature numerous instructional spaces, a full training bridge, and have space for up to 600 cadets to train in a maritime academic environment at sea. Up to 1,000 people can be accommodated on board when used in the HADR role.
