Irish Naval Service commissions OPV George Bernard Shaw

The Irish Naval Service commissioned the offshore patrol vessel (OPV) LÉ George Bernard Shaw on Tuesday, April 30.

The final one of four Samuel Beckett-class OPVs designed by Vard and built by Babcock Marine Appledore, the vessel honours Irish writer and playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Like its sisters, George Bernard Shaw has a length of 90 metres, a beam of 14 metres, and a speed of 23 knots. Armament consists of a 76-millimetre naval gun, two 20-millimetre autocannons, and four 7.62-millimetre machine guns.

Secondary missions include dive support, search and rescue (SAR), and deployment of unmanned vehicles.
