Iran claims cargo ship damaged in deliberate attack in Red Sea

An Iranian cargo vessel was the target of a deliberate attack in the Red Sea on Tuesday, April 6, the country’s foreign ministry told local media in the days following the incident.

Foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the cargo vessel Saviz suffered minor damage after limpet mines struck its hull near the Djibouti coast at around 06:00 local time on Tuesday.

No casualties were reported on Saviz, which Mr Khatibzadeh clarified was a civilian vessel stationed in the Red Sea to provide logistical support for Iranian security forces conducting anti-piracy operations.

The Iranian government has not identified which group was responsible for placing the mines in the area. However, Mr Khatibzadeh said that an investigation into the incident has already begun.
