Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE), an emergency services provider based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, formally welcomed a new boat into service on Tuesday, July 20.

The boat has been named Kjipuktuk after the Mi’kmaw word for “great harbour,” which is also the name of the harbour in Halifax from where it will operate.

The newbuild was supplied by Ontario-based MetalCraft Marine to replace HRFE’s existing rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB). Among the new boat’s features are a heated cabin below deck and a fire pump that can discharge over 13,600 litres of water per minute.

Kjipuktuk will also be used for search and rescue duties.
