Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been awarded a US$936 million contract for the construction of an additional Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyer for the US Navy.

The vessel will have a displacement of 9,700 tonnes, a length of 155 metres, a crew of 323, and four General Electric LM2500 19,570kW gas turbines that will deliver speeds in excess of 30 knots.

Compared to earlier Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, the Flight III ships will all feature active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar wherein radio waves may be aimed in various directions even as the radar antenna remains in a fixed position.
