Partnership proposes LNG bunkering capability at Port Hedland

Pilbara Clean Fuels (PCF) and Oceania Marine Energy (OME) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to facilitate collaboration to provide a low-carbon footprint LNG production and marine bunkering capability at Port Hedland in Western Australia.

The LNG marine fuel bunkering business will utilise a purpose-designed refuelling vessel to be chartered from Kanfer Shipping of Norway. The vessel will supply LNG fuel to ships, primarily those plying the Asia-Australia iron ore trade routes via Port Hedland.

The project will provide an Australian LNG fuel supply capability through a new facility for the conversion of pipeline natural gas to LNG.

A key feature of the project is a fully electrified plant with outsourced power supplied from predominantly renewable sources. OME said the plant design intent is to significantly reduce emissions compared to conventional LNG plants, thereby providing the ability for “round-trip” LNG bunkering in Port Hedland to achieve substantially lower overall GHG life-cycle emissions compared to other options.
