The Northern Territory Seafood Council has released its findings and report on the significant opportunity to develop seafood processing capacity and capability within the Northern Territory (NT).

“The NT seafood industry has the potential to contribute to real economic growth and value-add by transforming the way NT seafood is processed, benefiting both the Territory and Australia,” said Katherine Winchester, Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Territory Seafood Council. “Territory seafood is known for being sourced from pristine waters with abundant fish stocks, and its high quality. However, a substantial portion of our seafood is currently sent interstate for processing, leading to a loss of value for the NT.”

Through recent research and industry workshops, it has been revealed that there is tremendous potential within the Territory seafood industry to develop capacity and capability for seafood processing locally. Expanding the processing capacity not only has the potential to grow local businesses and create jobs but also maximises the value of Territory seafood and improves access to other markets.

The Northern Territory Government, in collaboration with industry partners, continuously supports sustainable fishing and aquaculture management, ensuring that Territorians have access to local seafood that supports the industry.

“Commercial fishing and aquaculture contribute $136 million to our local economy, and it is exciting to see the industry identifying ways in which it can continue to grow,” added Paul Kirby, Minister for Agribusiness and Fisheries.
