Kingsley was undoubtedly all of the above but he was also a remarkably free thinking intellectual and a brilliant, persistent businessman.
This extensively researched book captures the subject's life and times very effectively. Having lived through the American War of Independence and built his businesses through the French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, the Seminole Wars, the Haitian slave revolution and much more, Kingsley certainly had the benefit of living in interesting times.
His remarkably agile brain enabled him to take ready advantage of all that turmoil. Despite his slave-owning, which was the norm at the time, and his rejection of religion, he appears to have been a genuinely good man. A good and useful citizen who made things happen.
Despite a few example of repetition, probably because the book took 30 years to write, this is an excellent biography. A fascinating subject who lived in equally fascinating times – not unlike our own.
