Generally recognised as the first ever operable submarine, the tiny 'Turtle' was conceived and launched in 1775. While not significantly effective itself, it certainly showed enough promise to inspire the development of modern submarines a century or so later.
The 'Turtle' technology also inspired the construction and operation of a very close replica some two centuries after the original. The authors were leading lights in the replica project.
Their fascinating and detailed book covers both the history of the original craft and a report on the construction and operation of the replica. That was done as a university project. An interesting and inspiring project of the best kind. We can only wish that all university teachers could be so imaginative.
