One of history's less celebrated wars, that of 1812 between Britain and the United States is, nevertheless, full of interest for the keen student.
The War of 1812 was much more of a close run thing than many historians, especially American ones, have acknowledged. There is no doubt that Andrew Jackson's victory at New Orleans and Oliver Perry's on Lake Erie were decisive and important. However, it has to be remembered that Washington D.C. was burned and the American economy badly damaged by the British blockade.
The authors give a fair and balanced overview that is considerably enhanced by a large and high quality selection of illustrations. Importantly, as the authors point out, the war "…contributed to the robust defence spending (especially on the navy) …that characterised the post war years."
