By Basil Lubbock
From Baird Maritime:
Another in the collection of classic Lubbock authored books being offered by their publisher at a very special price.
Basil Lubbock wrote extensively, well and in great detail of the clipper ships and their ilk before they faded from memory. His books are very valuable examples of nineteenth century maritime history.
This one is typical. The opium clippers were exactly the kinds of ships Lubbock most admired. They were fast, efficient and very elegant. Their owners and commanders were also Lubbock's kind of people. They were adventurous, enterprising and prepared to take a risk.
They needed to be. Their trade was not only forbidden but it took place in forbidding waters. Pirates and trouble were everywhere. Resourceful commanders and fast, hard ships were imperative for survival and profit.
Theirs is a great story and Lubbock told it every well.
