History of United States Naval Operations in World War II Volume 13
From Baird Maritime
As is well known General McArthur swore to return to the Philippines after he was unceremoniously thrown out of the country early in 1942. This as the author has clearly explained may not have been the most logical reason for America's forces to attack and recover the Philippines during their victorious drive for Japan itself.
Whatever, MacArthur's will prevailed and one of the most vicious but interesting campaigns ensued. The Battle of Leyte Gulf is covered in another volume. This one covers the remainder of the campaign and, most particularly, the relief of Luzon.
A brilliant, comprehensive and very detailed description of a masterpiece of planning, logistics and effect. Considering the immensity of the Philippines problem, it was a quick campaign. Almost everyone involved has been accorded full credit. Excellent reading.
