The Golden Dream – A History of St Lawrence Seaway

Baird Maritime

By Ronald Stagg

From Baird Maritime:

Like most major canal developments, the Saint Lawrence Seaway was a long time coming. Indeed, it involved nearly four centuries of dreams, agitation and preparation.

Your reviewer spent much of his childhood avoiding lectures on this new "wonder of the world" from his Canadaphile parents who seemed obsessed with the development of the Seaway in the late fifties.

Allowing for that prejudice, though, he is impressed with the Seaway and needs no reminding of its enormous contribution to the seaborne commerce of the north American mid-west.

While it doesn't quite rank with Suez or Panama in importance, it is, nevertheless, one of the world's major canal developments. This book records its history and presents it very well.
