The Ferry: A Drive-Through History

Marjorie Gerlinger
Author: Bruce Peter & Philip Dawson
Publisher: Ferry Publications

From Baird Maritime

Starting in 1850 with the world's first Ro-Pax ferry, the 'Leviathan', which operated on the River Clyde near Glasgow, this very comprehensive book covers the history of ferries, particularly Ro-Pax, since then.

Lavishly illustrated and tightly but well written, the book concentrates on European, mainly north European ferries. Of course, many of those ferries have continued their careers in other parts of the world after completing their European service.

Much of the focus is on the style and decoration of ferries. There is not a lot about the naval architecture and engineering. Nor is there much about safety or any of the well-known disasters involving ferries. Perhaps an overly sunny and positive view prevails.
