The Coast of Australia

Baird Maritime
Authors: Andrew D Short and Colin D Woodroffe
Publisher: Cambridge University Press

From Baird Maritime:

Two of Australia's leading coastal scientists have collaborated to produce this very valuable description of the island continent's lengthy coastline.

At about 18,000 nautical miles in length and covering a whole range of climatic conditions from tropical to cool temperate, the coast offers considerable variety. The same applies geologically.

There is, therefore, much to be studied. Perhaps surprisingly, much of the Australian coast is little visited. Much is inaccessible and most is un-named. It was ripe for a study of this kind.

The authors have done their subject proud. This fascinating coast is simply and clearly described and very well illustrated. Their descriptions and conclusions are refreshingly free of the unreal hysteria and hyperbole that have recently become so common in similar works. They have taken a thoroughly scientific approach and their conclusions are generally positive.

For anyone working around or in any way interested in the Australian coast, this book provides an excellent and very enjoyable way of learning considerably more about it.
