From Baird Maritime
We do not normally review novels here but given this one was published by the Naval Institute Press which is the former employer and, arguably, the incubator of Tom Clancy, it was decided to make an exception here.
Berube has excellent credentials for the creation of a very readable novel. He teaches at the US Naval Academy, is a former Office of Naval Intelligence operative and has deployed to the Persian Gulf as a Navy Reserve officer.
With this kind of background combined with a vivid imagination and an excellent geopolitical general knowledge, the result is eminently readable.
Perhaps not quite a new Tom Clancy, but Berube definitely knows his stuff and, like Clancy, he can certainly build suspense to a crescendo.
Co-incidentally, your reviewer recalls meeting a cashiered naval officer with a history rather like that of the book's hero Connor Stark. It would be interesting to learn of any connection.
Thought provoking.
