By Fred M. Walker
From Baird Maritime:
This is a rather strange, eccentric and highly selective product of a rather improbable collaboration of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects from Britain and the Naval Institute Press of the United States.
The result is a somewhat eclectic selection of vignettes describing some 130 engineers, scientists, shipbuilders, ship owners and naval architects who the author believes "shaped ship design and shipbuilding worldwide.
Most are British but they have been leavened by a handful of Americans, Russians, Europeans and Scandinavians. There is an Indian and an Australian, but no one else from Asia and the Pacific.
Despite its many glaring omissions, the book is a most interesting read as long as readers bear in mind that it is far from all encompassing.
