Richard Dunston Ltd of Thorne & Hessle: Yorkshire Shipbuilders

Baird Maritime
Author: Mike Taylor
Publisher: Pen & Sword Books

From Baird Maritime:

Having visited the Hessle shipyard of Richard Dunston Ltd in the late 1980s, your reviewer has some feel for this famous shipbuilder even if only in its dying days.

An aerial photograph and pictures of the yard's final tugs certainly brought back memories of two decades or so ago. The fact is that Dunston was one of the last of the notable British shipyards to close. Now, sadly, the once world's greatest shipbuilding nation has practically no commercial shipyards left.

This book, therefore, provides a very important historical record. The Dunston yards, between them, produced an enormous number and range of vessels. Many were tugs and barges but there were ferries and fishing boats, large ships and even a couple of yachts.

Fortunately, the company preserved a large number of high quality photographs of its activities and vessels. These have been artfully and artistically brought together by the author in an interesting and valuable history.
