Swedish Coast Guard orders new RIBs from Finnish builder

The Swedish Coast Guard and Finnish boatbuilder Boomeranger have entered into an agreement for the construction and delivery of 14 high-speed rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) in a series.

Nine of the RIBs will be optimised for coastal patrol duties while the remaining five will be operated as interceptors. Deliveries of all 14 boats are scheduled to commence in 2026 and end in 2029.

The agreement between the coast guard and Boomeranger also includes options for the purchase of additional boats of each of the two sub-types.

The 13.5-metre coastal patrol RIBs will be built for year-round use in ice-free conditions in both inshore and offshore waters. The coast guard said these may also be deployed to the Mediterranean to support the activities of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

The 11-metre interceptors will meanwhile be built for year-round use in ice-free conditions in inshore waters.

Both RIB sub-types will be equipped to perform a range of duties including environmental protection, search and rescue, surveillance, fisheries enforcement, and customs enforcement.
