It is interesting that in this magazine's 20 year database of passenger vessel accidents, there have been very few in German waters, particularly since World War II. Could this be because Germans are more careful and build better quality vessels? Perhaps it's because they have a first rate marine rescue service. It's certainly not because Germany's surrounding seas are benign.
Whatever, the Rescue Service (DGZRS) must have something to do with it. This magnificently presented commemorative book shows very clearly why. Similar in many ways to its British, Dutch, French and Norwegian counterparts, the DGZRS has similarly well-trained and brave crews but it has even more magnificent vessels and equipment.
The author is a first rate photographer who has really captured the contemporary life of the rescue service quite brilliantly. The boats and their crews are very comprehensively described. Through recording of re-enactments and use of museums, the Service's history is also faithfully presented.
