VESSEL REVIEW | Jiahaike 7 – DP2-capable research ship to be deployed in Chinese offshore waters

Baird Maritime

China’s Zhuhai Jiahai Marine Technology recently welcomed a new research vessel to its fleet.

Jiahaike 7 (嘉海科7) was designed by the Zhejiang Xinhai Ship Design and Research Institute and built by the Guangzhou Salvage Bureau in compliance with China Classification Society rules.

It is notable for being one of the first privately-owned research vessels in China to be fitted with a DP2 system, which will ensure safe positioning for conducting scientific and geological surveys in offshore waters.

Multi-role platform with advanced monitoring technology

The newbuild has welded steel construction, an LOA of 70.26 metres (230.5 feet), a beam of 13.3 metres (43.6 feet), a design draught of 4.1 metres (13 feet), a depth of 5.6 metres (18 feet), and a displacement of 2,000 tonnes.

An electric propulsion system consisting of a motor driving an azimuthing stern propeller will reduce the vessel’s environmental impact when operating in offshore and coastal areas.

The DP2 system supplied by Kongsberg will also provide positioning support for other duties such as cable laying, geological drilling to depths of up to 150 metres (490 feet), static cone penetration operations, underwater target tracking, and high- and low-speed automatic tracking.

A remote monitoring system installed by CSSC Ship Electronic Technology will meanwhile enable the owner to identify potential issues with the vessel's onboard machinery and other critical systems and to schedule maintenance accordingly. This will reduce the risk of equipment breaking down while the vessel is out at sea.

Full equipment suite and facilities selection

Jiahaike 7 also features a stern A-frame, an offshore crane, and a 2.8- by 2.8-metre (9.2- by 9.2-foot) moonpool through which survey sensors and other equipment may be deployed and recovered. The open aft deck has a total area of 500 square metres (5,400 square feet)

The vessel’s onboard facilities include wet and dry laboratories, a conference room, and a mess.
