By F. Jay Schempf
From Baird Maritime:
An invaluable history of the offshore oil industry told using a series of brief clear feature articles enhanced by vignettes of the industry's pioneers.
Obviously American focussed, because that is where the industry came from, the book still gives credit, where it is due, to other parts of the world.
Well illustrated with clear photographs and drawings, the book describes almost every aspect of the offshore hydrocarbon extraction industry. It covers the very early days, in the 1930s, through the massive development that commenced in 1947 until almost the present day.
This book is a great example of what can be done when a very experienced journalist/historian sets his mind to it. It would be wonderful if other sectors of the maritime industry could have their histories so well and faithfully recorded.
