Japanese shipowner Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) recently welcomed a new workboat to its harbour support fleet.
Designed without an onboard diesel generator, E-Crea will support the docking and undocking of tugs at the Yokohama facilities of local shipyard Keihin Dock, which built the workboat.
E-Crea is powered solely by batteries charged from shore facilities at the Koyasu shipyard. NYK said the vessel is significantly quieter compared to conventional ships running on fossil fuels, substantially reducing operational noise.
Measuring approximately nine metres (30 feet) long by three metres (10 feet) wide and able to transport 14 people, the workboat consolidates all essential equipment within its compact hull. NYK said the design enables exceptional manoeuvrability in confined spaces, making it ideally suited for assisting with docking operations and vessel movement at shipyards.
Following the installation of the electric propulsion system, including substantial battery modules in the hull, the vessel’s weight exceeded initial projections. To maintain proper balance, the design team reconfigured the placement of equipment as well as cabling, thereby optimising the internal space and ensuring safe and stable navigation.
To effectively manage heat caused by elevated temperatures from the batteries and the electric motors, the design team incorporated multi-layered water-cooling systems and integrated air ducts. Enhancements to the battery room include fireproofing measures and protection against hazardous gases along with improved ventilation.
E-Crea is classed by the Japan Craft Inspection Organisation. Data and insights gained from the workboat's construction and operation will be reflected in the development of an electric tug scheduled for completion in December 2026.
Development of the electric workboat was done by NYK in response to the growing global demand for reducing carbon emissions in maritime transportation.
The company determined that fully electric work vessels represent some of the most viable options for sustainable shipping. Keihin Dock, NYK’s sole shipbuilding subsidiary, was designated the lead for the project.
