New UK-designed electric workboat range boasts modular construction

UK-based Fish Marine Design (FMD) has introduced a new series of workboats with modular construction and lengths ranging from 12 to 24 metres.

FMD said the first example is being developed in collaboration with RAD Propulsion and will be fitted with the latter's proprietary 120kW drive system. Its official launch is scheduled for later this year.

FMD said the workboat will be purpose-built for low power draw applications with an emphasis on manoeuvrability and energy efficiency without any loss in capability.

In "extended battery" configuration, the vessel will be able to sail up to 140 nautical miles on a single charge. Onboard solar power generation will also be available to support auxiliary ship systems.

The standard workboat model will include four 61kW batteries, with the option to add an additional four for extended range. Future upgrades may also include a range extender, depending on user needs.

FMD said a key feature of the vessel will be its adaptability in that it would enable customers to easily configure the craft based on their specific requirements. Planned modules include a commuter ferry and a commercial workboat.
