Following the Iraq and Afghanistan debacles the United States is in need of a bit of good military news. This very detailed yet widely researched book provides at least some hope for the future.

Special forces are not just successful because of the mystique that surrounds them. They are recruited into their units because, generally, they are tougher more resourceful, more resilient and more capable than their counterparts in the wider military. The do, however, need to be well led, inspired and controlled.

Generally speaking, small elite forces such as those operated as special forces in recent wars are more effective than massed armies. Where used judiciously they can be exceptionally valuable on a cost-benefit basis.

Given the staggering waste of men and materiel engendered by the mad decisions of George W. Bush and his cronies, it is good to learn that American military leaders are learning of the value of the kinds of precise, surgical and, above all, economical operations that special ops people are capable of.

Linda Robinson has made herself an expert in this field. She knows her stuff. It is to be hoped that she will be widely listened to by America's future leaders.
