From Baird Maritime
Many commercial mariners tend to disparage their yachting counterparts as idlers, fantasists and braggarts. To some degree that is fair but, it is important to note, many significant maritime advances in terms of concept, design and construction have arisen in the yacht sector.
There is actually a two-way flow between yachting and commercial. That should only be encouraged. It's the cross fertilisation of ideas that counts.
With both interior and exterior designs a lot of what appears avante garde in yachts today will find its way into ferries and cruise vessels tomorrow. In the "spare-no-expense" world of mega yachts hull shape and propulsion system developments are inspired by the egos of owners and their designs. It should be remembered, though, that fuel and economic efficiency are not often high on the list of requirements.
Nevertheless, this beautifully produced book, that is published annually, is a fount of exciting ideas. A very worthwhile proportion of them are actually relevant to commercial vessels. They will inspire their designers.
