Mediterranean Cruising Handbook

Marjorie Gerlinger
Author: Rod Heikell
Publisher: Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson

From Baird Maritime

It's a pity the world is too big for Rod and Lucinda Heikell to describe completely with their pilots and handbooks.

While aimed at yachtsmen, their output is equally valuable to all mariners including commercial and military ones. Obviously, most of the information they proffer can be obtained elsewhere but their talent and value is in presenting it in a very user friendly and interesting manner.

Subjects covered include geology, hydrology, climate, history,  archaeology, food, wine, navigation, ships papers, weather, marine life, vessel equipment, first aid, safety, communications, radio, country descriptions, useful books. There is also a useful map showing 400 vital GPS waypoints.

At about 2,000 by 800 nautical miles the Mediterranean is a conveniently sized body of water to describe. There are, of course, many other seas that would benefit from similar treatment.

The maritime world should be clamouring for more of these books.
