Even more than two centuries after he circumnavigated Australia, Matthew Flinders continues to fascinate many Australians, both mariners and history enthusiasts.
Flinders, like many who die too young, has been the subject of much romantic speculation and even a reasonably good novel. All of this has rather muddied the water of his life story.
The author, in this case, has set out to and succeeded in producing a highly accurate but equally highly readable biography based on vast and painstaking research. Hers is an almost fanatical attention to detail.
Despite its necessarily considerable reliance on speculation, the author has produced a lively, well-grounded and very useful biography of one of Britain's and Australia's greatest maritime explorers.
