Lifeboat Heroes – Outstanding RNLI Rescues From Three Centuries

Baird Maritime

By Edward Wake-Walker

From Baird Maritime:

Britain's Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a uniquely British organisation. A charity but, in reality, a kind of mutual insurance society.

It has been emulated but never precisely reproduced in other countries such as The Netherlands, Germany and Norway. Mostly, there is considerably more government involvement in the funding and management of their replica organisations.

The RNLI is very largely manned by volunteers who practice in their own time and at their own or their employers' expense. There are dozens of RNLI stations dotted around the coast of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

In addition to a history and overview of the RNLI, this book describes 16 of the most dramatic rescues that took place over its 185 year history. They comprise some fantastic stories of small boat seamanship and utter heroism.
