From Baird Maritime:
The invasion of Iwo Jima needs little introduction to our readers. Suffice to say, it was one of the major battles of World War II in the Pacific.
This book covers the vital two days before the battle commenced. It describes the reconnaissance and scouting activities of the four hundred U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition experts and 22 Marine observers who participated. Importantly, it also describes the efforts of the Captains and crews of the twelve Landing Craft Infantry gunboats that took them close in.
Forty per cent of those involved were either killed or wounded. Nine of the gunboats were badly damaged and one sank. Nine of the twelve gunboat captains were awarded the Navy Cross and one the Congressional Medal of Honour.
A costly but successful operation that is brilliantly described in this well illustrated book.
