The Astrakhan branch of Russian port operator Rosmorport has added the Project 1191 icebreaker Avraamiy Zavenyagin (Авраамий Завенягин) to its fleet following a nine-month dock repair in Arkhangelsk.
The 1984-built vessel was previously operated by the company's Arctic Basin branch and arrived at Astrakhan in August. It is the Astrakhan branch's fourth icebreaker and its 54th vessel overall.
The icebreaker was assigned to Rosmorport from the Russian state treasury under the right of economic management in October 2024.
The company said a subsequent assessment of its technical condition found that the vessel urgently required repairs and could not reach a ship-repair facility under her own power.
After winter lay-up at the port of Dudinka, Avraamiy Zavenyagin was towed to Arkhangelsk, where a local ship repair firm carried out dock repairs to the scope required for her next scheduled survey.
The branch plans to deploy the icebreaker with its three other vessels to escort convoys through the Volga-Caspian Shipping Canal and in the waters of the ports of Astrakhan and Olya.
Avraamiy Zavenyagin has a length of 76.52 metres, a beam of 16.59 metres, a moulded depth of 4.6 metres, and a draught of 2.8 metres. Three main engines with a combined output of 4,815 kW drive four 2,000mm fixed-pitch propellers.
The icebreaker can make 14 knots in open water and one knot in ice one metre thick. She has a crew of 19 and an endurance of 25 days.
