Forgotten Continent: The Battle for Latin America’s Soul

Baird Maritime
Author: Michael Reid
Publisher: Yale University Press

From Baird Maritime:

Latin America suffers from a bad press. It generally has a bad image in most of the rest of the world.

Grindingly poor, corrupt, politically unstable, unhealthy and violent. Many of these adjectives are richly deserved. There is however, much more to the continent than that.

Latin America, as the author points out, is rapidly changing – mostly for the better. It is becoming richer, safer, healthier and increasingly democratic.

It has been rich before. After all, its material assets are staggeringly beautiful but they have too often been squandered. Whether or not the recent progress will be maintained remains to be seen. The author (and your reviewer) are positive about this.

Certainly, from a maritime perspective, Latin America is a land of opportunity. The justification for that comment is well explained in this timely book.
