Float Planes & Flying Boats: The US Coast Guard and Early Naval Aviation

Marjorie Gerlinger
Author: Capt. Robert B Workman Jr., USCG (Ret)
Publisher: The Naval Institute Press

From Baird Maritime

The average reader may think that this book is rather too aviation-focused to be reviewed on these pages. That would be quite wrong because in this context aviation and maritime matters are closely intertwined.

Captain Workman is passionate about his subject. This ensures high levels of depth, breadth and accuracy in this context. He is also obviously very well connected which has enabled him to compile a brilliant selection of photographs.

Nowadays aviation is simply an integral part of most naval or coastguard activities so it is hard to imagine it being such an unwanted "orphan" less than a century ago.

The author describes that background well and enhances that with first-rate descriptions of the men and aircraft involved.

An interesting and useful account of an important period of rapid technical and attitudinal advances.
