Naval history enthusiasts everywhere are indeed fortunate that the Naval Institute Press has re-issued in paperback the incomparable record of World War II that Morison and his crew produced six decades ago.
Still fresh and exciting to read, this is naval history at its best. It details the dramatic turn around in American fortunes in the nine months from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. It also includes a brief overview of early American submarine activity which was later to prove so devastating against the Japanese.
Midway, quite correctly, is generally regarded as the critical turning point of the Pacific war. However, as Morison so brilliantly describes, there was a lot of other critical activity in the months leading up to it. Even at this early stage of the war it was quite possible to see that Japan would be defeated and why.
