From Baird Online:

This period commenced with the British Navy as the largest and most powerful in the world. By the end of the period the Navy had been knocked about fighting against the combined forces of the French, Spanish, Dutch and the American colonists.

Over those 78 years the British Navy possessed a total of more than 2,000 ships. Those ships developed rapidly – it was a testing period with constant war and skirmishes. They fought in the Mediterranean Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the West Indies, the Atlantic, the North Sea and the Arabian Sea. The author has collated an amazing number of paintings, etchings, drawings and statistics to very thoroughly describe a large part of that massive fleet. Brittania truly ruled the waves at that time. A wonderful example of indefatigable research and scholarship.
