Another Damen cutter suction dredger for Nigeria

Valentine Watkins

Damen has recently delivered a CSD500-series cutter suction dredger to Nigeria.

The stationary dredger was assembled on a beach and pushed and tugged into the sea over a ramp.

Once fully deployed, the cutter suction dredger will perform maintenance duties in and around the harbours of Port Harcourt.

According to Damen, all of the shipbuilder's cutter suction dredgers are dismountable, making for easy transportation.

Various elements such as the pontoons and control cabin were hoisted from the transport ship onto trucks. These trucks were then unloaded on a Nigerian beach for dredger assembly on the spot.

The crew, together with a Damen field service engineer, assembled the cutter suction dredger using locally available hoisting gear.

The CSD500 will perform maintenance duties at a dredging depth of up to 16 metres in the wider Port Harcourt area. The dredge pump has a mixture capacity of 4,000m³/h and a swing width of 40 metres.

The delivery of the vessel included a floating pipeline, land-based pipeline, a spare parts package, and two weeks of crew training from Damen field service engineers.
