Valentine Watkins

Greek ship-owners are leading a turnaround in the field of LNG gas carriers. According to Clarkson Research, almost half of the 82 LNG carriers ordered or under construction globally are destined to a Greek shipping company.

These LNG carrier orders made by Greek companies represent a value of up to USD7.4 billion.

The Angelicoussis Group ordered 11 vessels, worth more than USD2.0 billion. The Group operates five LNG carriers through its subsidiary Maran Gas Maritime.

GasLog, a subsidiary of Peter Livanos, has ordered eight vessels under an investment program worth over USD1.6 billion. The delivery of the carriers currently under construction will commence in 2013, with a completion date slated for 2015.

The George Prokopiou Dynagas Goup has ordered seven LNG carriers and has already three in service, the Cardiff Marine George Economou company has ordered four ships, and the Thenamaris company, owned by Dinos Martinos, has three ships under construction.

Christos Kanellakis Alpha Tankers has ordered two LNG carriers, the Gas Almi Company, owned by Costas Fostiropoulos, has ordered two ships, and the Tsakos Energy Navigation Company has ordered a carrier and has an option for an additional vessel. The company is planning to start operating a fleet of an additional eight LNG carriers over the next six years.
