COSCO to develop business in Taiwan

Taiwan: The 'COSCO Kaohsiung', a containership operated by the China Ocean Shipping (COSCO) Group, was christened at Kaohsiung Harbour on October 24 as the shipping conglomerate attempted to strengthen growth in Taiwan.

Among the VIPs at the christening ceremony were Wei Jiazhu, chief executive of COSCO, and Lien Chan, chairman of the ruling Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang.

The 10,000TEU 'COSCO Kaohsiung' was supposed to arrive in Kaohisung on October 23, but was delayed due to heavy winds and strong waves in the wake of Typhoon Megi.

COSCO maintains close ties with Taiwan's shipping firms including Yang Ming, Evergreen and Wan Hai, and it has the capability to help Kaohsiung Harbour expand and upgrade itself, Wei said.

COSCO has already set up an office in Taiwan, the first Chinese state transportation firm to do so, he said. The office will serve as a liaison between COSCO and any potential Taiwanese partners.
