Mammoet awarded wreck removal of ‘Baltic Ace’

Valentine Watkins

The Dutch Department of Public Works has awarded the contract for the salvage of the wreck of the car carrier 'Baltic Ace' to Mammoet Salvage.

The 'Baltic Ace' sank after a collision with the 'Corvus J' in December 2012, in the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone, near the coast of the province of Zeeland.

The Dutch government contract stipulates both the wreck and its cargo are to be removed, as they pose a threat to the marine environment and to shipping on the busy route towards the Port of Rotterdam. The contract with Mammoet was signed on 24 March 2014.

Execution of the project is expected to commence in the spring of 2014 and will be completed before the end of 2015.

The activities include the removal of the entire wreck, its cargo and 540,000 litres of fuel oil.
