Two new escort tugs delivered to Mexican operator CMM

Two new escort tugs, CMM Azteca and CMM Mexico, have been delivered to Mexican operator Compania Maritima Mexicana (CMM). These new tugs are based on a design by Robert Allan Ltd and were built in Hong Kong.

The two vessels have begun their delivery voyage from Hong Kong to Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, where they will enter service. CMM is an affiliate company of Boluda Towage.

The newbuilds are the latest in a series based on a widely-used design by Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd, with 29 examples delivered to various operators over the past 12 years, according to the firm.

Designed as escort tugs, the vessels each have a length of 32 metres, a beam of 12.8 metres, and a gross tonnage of under 500. They are classed by Lloyd’s Register with notations including Escort Tug and Fire-Fighting Ship 1. During sea trials, the tugs reportedly achieved a bollard pull of over 83 tonnes and a free running speed of more than 13.4 knots.
